GENERAL MANAGER - TORONTO PLANT


The position reports to the Vice President, Operations.


POSITION SUMMARY

The General Manager is responsible for the overall success of the operation, including achievement of the safety, quality, service, productivity, and financial objectives. The General Manager directly manages the local commercial print sales team, provides leadership and support to other sales teams, and has direct management responsibility for all plant functions including Customer Service, Estimating, Production, and Shipping. The General Manager works to maintain and develop a culture of innovation within the business to ensure that the operation continues to provide a diverse portfolio of print solutions that meet the Customers’ current and future needs. This is a hands‐on position, with responsibility for timely, data driven decision making to develop ongoing strategy for the products and services within this portfolio, and to manage the day to day operations. Additionally, the General Manager will be a key contributor in evaluating and directing new business opportunities, and in identifying and implementing successful strategies to expand the Customer and revenue base.

Given the foregoing objectives, a deep understanding of the print industry and related services, along with sound business acumen is a must for this role. The ideal candidate will have a proven track‐record of managing print products through all facets of the product lifecycle, with the ability to identify and capture opportunities to increase revenue. The candidate will have a demonstrated ability to lead and manage a large, complex manufacturing operation, including having successfully driven continuous improvement in safety, quality, service, and productivity. He or she will be detail‐oriented, organized, efficient, and excel at communicating with cross‐functional teams throughout all levels of the organization. The General Manager will cultivate strong working relationships with internal and external groups including sales, marketing, finance and technical teams, as well as with vendors, to drive collaboration and to ensure deliverables are launched on time, to specification, and on budget.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide strategic leadership and coaching to employees through a shared vision for the operation.

• Develop knowledge systems and measurements that help the business make profitable decisions.

• Own the relationship with sales – be the product champion and provide them with the products, pricing models and marketing materials to be successful.

• Lead a team of commercial print sales professionals and provide strategic direction, management, motivation and coaching to ensure all goals are met.

• Effectively manage and advance all aspects of manufacturing; health & safety, environmental stewardship, reliability, quality, productivity, cost yield, compliance and capital/maintenance investment.

• Provide leadership and direction to the management team and all employees to ensure Customer and Company goals are met.

• Work with local HR staff to manage salaried and hourly operation employees, including development of roles/responsibilities/expectations, performance reviews and compensation evaluations for each individual employee.

• Develop opportunity assessments, benchmarks and business cases to be presented to the senior management and champion initiatives from concept to implementation.

• Build and maintain successful relationships with stakeholders, external customers, and key vendors.

• Management of day to day business and product operations.

• Identification, measurement, and management of key performance indicators.

• Remain abreast of the competitive landscape and print media trends.

• Other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

• Deep knowledge and expertise in managing a large, complex print manufacturing facility.

• Demonstrated experience / ability in consistently meeting and exceeding financial targets.

• Proven ability to manage numerous multiple priorities and tasks effectively.

• Ability to think and plan strategically, while also being able to oversee the day‐to‐day tactical execution of actions within the business.

• Effective verbal and written communication skills throughout all levels of the organization.

• Bachelor’s degree and or at least 10 years of managerial experience in a print, sales, engineering, or maintenance role in a large‐scale manufacturing environment.

• Highly computer literate with experience using Microsoft Office, along with SAP or equivalent ERP applications. Also beneficial to have experience with traditional graphic design and publication tools and applications.

• Positive Customer service experience, including negotiation skills – must have a passion and an unflinching desire to always do what’s right for them.
